Director of the Career Center

Originally born in Asheville, my career has taken me from Iredell county, to New York City, to Williamsburg, Virginia, and now Asheville.. It’s been an amazing journey and one that I am excited to share with UNC Asheville students. A strong supporter of the liberal arts, my Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University is in Sociology, with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. I have a Master of Education in Community Counseling from The College of William & Mary.

My drive is to connect students with opportunity, because the best way to learn about yourself and who you want to be is to gain experience. As the director of the career center, I am dedicated to ensuring the Career Center is not only a resource for individual students and alumni but also serves as a place to build connections.

Though I’m originally from Allentown, PA I’ve lived most of my life in Indianapolis, IN. I didn’t realize how much I missed the mountains until moving to Asheville, and I absolutely love living here. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and later earned my Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University with concentrations in adult education and instructional systems technology. I started my career in human resources but transitioned to career services and discovered that it was the field that I wanted to stay in.

I love helping students discover their passions and helping them learn how to make their dreams a reality. I am so excited to continue supporting students with their career exploration and development at UNC Asheville, as well as partnering with faculty to support their efforts to bring career education into the classroom. Outside of work, I love reading, hiking, and spending time with my two Newfoundlands. I highly value constant growth and learning, so my next adventure is trying to learn how to homestead.

David Earnhardt

Associate Director of Employer Relations

Office: 119 Ramsey Library

I am a North Carolina native, but prior to coming to UNC Asheville in 2016, I spent six years in the Boston area working with business students in a Residence Life and an Academic Advising setting. I also taught in a professional development seminar and ran a co-curricular program that focused exclusively on engaging students in their careers. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications & Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel from Western Carolina University and have found a great deal of satisfaction working with college students. In my role as the Associate Director for Employer Relations, I partner with area and regional employers to build recruiting strategies to bring more UNC Asheville students and alumni on board.

On a more personal note, environmental sustainability is a core value, I watch a ton of movies and care more about the Carolina Panthers than I probably should. I recently bought a home in the area, and plan to set deep roots in the community for years to come. Swing by my office in Ramsey Library, or send me an email, I’m looking forward to working with you.

A proud Jersey girl who grew up in NY, I earned my Bachelor of Science in History with a minor in Women & Gender Studies from SUNY Brockport before completing my Master of Science in Higher Education at Syracuse University. Looking to get away from Syracuse winters, I applied sight unseen to UNC Asheville and have been here ever since.

My original role in the Career Center was Student Engagement Coordinator, where I focused on event planning, marketing, and supervising our incredible student staff. I’m excited to be in a new role – Associate Director of Student Employment Development – where I hope to help make student employment even more impactful for students. Outside of work, I can be found cuddling my cats while reading or listening to my husband explain Premiere League soccer.

Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, higher education has been a part of my life from the very beginning. I fell in love with the southern Appalachians when earning my Bachelor’s degree in History at Young Harris College. I then spent some time in Boston earning my Master’s in Higher Education from Boston College. Before coming to Asheville, I worked at the University of Georgia and Lees-McRae College.

I am excited to be a UNC Asheville Bulldog and look forward to helping students turn their dreams to reality. Reasons to meet with me include exploring your major/career options, reviewing application documents, and generally preparing for life after graduation. Outside of work, I enjoy reading fantasy series, browsing farmer’s markets, and spending time with my two dogs.

I joined UNC Asheville as a Career Coach in the fall of 2023. Before joining the Career Center, I taught Humanities and First-Year Writing at several colleges and universities in the NC region, including some public and private institutions. I received my master’s degree from UNC Greensboro in English and double-majored in English and Studio Art as an undergraduate. My varied experiences in higher education fuel my passion to increase student engagement with student affairs and infuse equity and inclusion into everyone’s lived experiences. My book, Honey and Vinegar, explores the bittersweet truths about thriving in academia. I am originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, but grew up in Durham, NC. In my spare time, I enjoy being a homeowner in Morganton, NC with my two cats, trivia nights, hiking and camping, and enjoying local live scenes.

I’m originally from New York but was mostly raised in Charlotte, NC. I started coming annually to the Asheville area for the LEAF festival at 6 years old and fell in love with this artsy and beautiful community. After graduating from Appalachian State University with my B.S. in Ecology and Environmental Studies, I moved to Asheville and worked and volunteered with different research and conservation organizations.

I’ve held a lifelong love and respect for learning new things and exploration. I believe our careers are a way to do both and that crafting a career that reflects your values and interests is paramount to a successful and happy life. In my free time, you can find me re-enacting the Great British Bakeoff in my closet-sized kitchen, planning my next trip, hunting for weird secondhand finds with my partner, or making fiber art while watching bad reality TV.

Alex Rangel

Graduate Career Coach

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina; I was raised 20 minutes down the highway in Holly Springs. I began my educational journey at Wake Technical Community College and obtained my bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW) from Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) in 2020. Upon graduation, I moved to Hickory, NC, and began working as a College/Career Advisor at the high school level. It was during my time in this role that I decided to go back to school for my master’s degree. I am currently in the MAEd School Counseling program at Western Carolina University. It is my hope to graduate with both the school and clinical mental health counseling licensures. Since starting my master’s program, I recently moved to Asheville and am enthralled with the area.

I have a passion for helping individuals achieve their goals. I love empowering individuals to overcome obstacles, identify their strengths, and make informed decisions about their career paths. Whether you’re a current, recent, or past UNC Asheville graduate, I look forward to helping you navigate your career journey with confidence and clarity. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends, hiking, going to the gym, and watching baseball or soccer.
