Personal statement:
In grade school, I was always the one writing up the activities of the class for the school newsletter. At the University of Wisconsin, I was awarded a graduate assistantship because of my writing skills. What made me an effective writer? That question drove me to the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric. Helping UNCA students discover themselves as writers gives me great satisfaction. In the University Writing Center, I get to learn from students' writing about the psychobiography of Oprah Winfrey, the insect population of our Botanical Garden, and the effect of the arrival of the railroad on Tryon, NC, and countless other fascinating topics. The writing act continues to engage my intellectual curiosity.
