UNC Asheville, Institute for Applied Philosophy Launch Lecture Series; Bill Sabo to Discuss Electoral College on September 2
     Noted political scientist Bill Sabo, UNC Asheville professor of political science, will kick off UNC Asheville's 11th annual philosophy lecture series with a talk on "Republicanism versus the Democratic Impulse: The Electoral College" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2. The talk will be held at UNC Asheville's Kellogg Center, 11 Broyles Rd., Hendersonville. The event is open to the public. A donation of $5 will be suggested at the door to support student scholarships. » MORE

UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program Offers Fall Workshops
     Local writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills with the Great Smokies Writing Program's fall workshop series of eight courses in poetry and prose. The classes, held at varying locations in Asheville, are open to writers of varying levels. Students will earn UNC Asheville credit hours in Literature and Language. » MORE

UNC Asheville Offers Astronomy Class for K-12 Teachers
     This fall, UNC Asheville will offer a special online science class for local K-12 teachers. The course, "Stars, Constellations and Deep Sky Objects," will be offered pass/fail September 1-December 12. Upon completion, teachers will earn one academic credit and three technology continuing education units. Cost is $86.06. Twelve $100 stipends are also available; preference will be given to K-8 teachers. » MORE

UNC Asheville Art Students, Recent Graduates to Hold Fifth Annual Exhibition
     Works by UNC Asheville art students and recent graduates will be featured in the Selected Student Exhibit on view August 14-September 9 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. This fifth annual exhibition showcases upper-level student work produced in the past year. A closing reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the gallery.

UNC Asheville Welcomes 572 Freshmen on Friday;
Fall Semester Classes Begin August 19

     UNC Asheville is gearing up to welcome some 572 freshmen to campus on Friday to kick off the fall semester. Freshmen will check into residence halls on the morning of Friday, Aug. 15. Transfer students will move into the residence halls on Saturday, Aug. 16. Returning students will move in on Sunday and Monday, Aug. 17-18. Some 86 UNC Asheville faculty and staff will be on hand to help freshman and their parents with the move. » MORE

UNC Asheville Art Faculty to Hold Annual Exhibition
     Works by 10 UNC Asheville Art Department faculty members will be featured in a wide-ranging exhibition August 22-September 23 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The show kicks off the gallery's 2008-2009 season. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, in the gallery. » MORE

UNC Chapel Hill School of Social Work to Hold Information Session for Asheville Program
     Since 1985, the UNC Chapel Hill School of Social Work has offered its Master of Social Work degree through the Asheville Graduate Center on the campus of UNC Asheville. This distance education program enables students to study in Asheville, completing the first half of the program within two years. Students are then required to attend classes in Chapel Hill to finish the degree. The program will accept its next cohort of students for fall 2009. » MORE

Renowned Artist Sigmund Abeles to Visits UNC Asheville for Workshop, Lecture
     Internationally acclaimed, New York-based artist Sigmund Abeles will visit UNC Asheville August 26-28 for a series of special events. Abele's visit will coincide with the two-person exhibition "Uncommon Expressions: The Art of Sigmund Abeles and Jerome Witkin" on display at the Asheville Art Museum through August 28. » MORE

Registration Now Open for College for Seniors Fall Term;
More than 80 Classes Begin September 15

     Older adults can go back to school this fall at UNC Asheville’s nationally renowned College for Seniors. More than 84 courses are available during the fall term from September 15-November 13.      What do hawks, medicinal herbs and biofuels have in common? All are among the topics covered in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program's fall classes. Some 28 courses are available, beginning September 9. The Blue Ridge Naturalist Program is hosted by the nationally acclaimed North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement located on the UNC Asheville campus. UNC Asheville Hosts Course on Radon, Lead and Mold Safety
     UNC Asheville's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program will host a course covering proper testing and mitigation systems for radon, ways to identify and remove mold, and ways to check for lead paint and determine what constitutes a lead hazard. The course will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at UNC Asheville's Owen Conference Center. » MORE

     Famed North Carolina basket maker Billie Ruth Sudduth will be honored at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. The reception, hosted by UNC Asheville and the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, will celebrate Sudduth's 25 prestigious years in basket making. » MORE

UNC Asheville Offers Distance Learning Courses for Lateral Entry Teachers
    
UNC Asheville and A-B Technical Community College will host two distance learning courses designed for lateral entry teachers beginning in August. The courses, "EDUC 373: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas" and "EDUC 243: Learning Theory," will each consist of eight weeks of classroom training with a 15-hour online component and be available via teleconference. » MORE

UNC Asheville Offers LSAT Prep Class
     Registration is now open for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) prep class offered by UNC Asheville's Office of Professional Education Programs. The six-week course will meet on the UNC Asheville campus.

UNC Asheville Earns Top Spot in Fiske Guide to Colleges;
University Named Best Buy for 15 Consecutive Years

     UNC Asheville continues to stand with some of the nation's finest colleges in popular college rankings. The annual "Fiske Guide to Colleges" released its 2009 list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 15th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy.

North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement Offers Free Leadership Training
     The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will offer a free, seven-week course entitled "Leadership Training for Older Persons." The class will meet on the UNC Asheville Campus on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from September 12-October 24. » MORE

UNC Asheville Board of Trustees Elects New Officers, Adds New Trustee
     The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees elected new officers at its 2008-09 meeting July 10 on the UNC Asheville campus. Al Whitesides, vice president of Mountain 1st Bank & Trust, was elected chair; Pam Turner, Asheville community leader, was elected vice chair; and Dr. David Cogburn, an Asheville dermatologist and a 1977 alumnus of UNC Asheville, was elected secretary. » MORE

John G. Pierce Named UNC Asheville Vice Chancellor for Finance and Campus Operations
     John G. Pierce, former Vice President and CFO of Sonopress, has been named Vice Chancellor for Finance and Campus Operations at UNC Asheville. The appointment was made by the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees at its meeting on July 10, upon recommendation by UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder. » MORE

UNC Asheville Alumna Selected for Elite Environmental Internship
     UNC Asheville alumna Anna Lange recently was awarded an internship with the national environmental group Green Corps. Lange was one of some 25 candidates selected from more than 2,000 applicants from across the nation for the organization's highly competitive year-long environmental leadership training program. » MORE

UNC Asheville Professor Publishes Book Examining Religion in the South
    
Rodger M. Payne, UNC Asheville associate professor of religious studies, recently completed work on a new book entitled "Southern Crossroads: Perspectives on Religion and Culture." The University Press of Kentucky released the 390-page book on May 23. » MORE

Variety of Testing Services, Formats Available

     As the rise in distance education grows, so does the need for distance assessment. Many online classes require that exams be administered by a qualified proctor. Now, trained proctors at UNC Asheville's Asheville Graduate Center can provide a variety of tests, from post-graduate to professional exams. The Asheville Graduate Center customizes its services to fit test-takers' needs. Both computer- and paper-based testing services are provided. » MORE

UNC Asheville Names First Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics; Professor's Work will Focus on American Poverty Courses, Research
     UNC Asheville Economics Professor Joseph M. Sulock has been named the University's first Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics. The distinguished professorship was established in October 2007 in honor of Cary Owen, who is known throughout the state as a remarkable champion for public education. It is especially fitting that the distinguished professorship is in the field of economics; Owen was one of the first women to major in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. » MORE

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Awards $500,000 to Appalachian College Association; Funds to Support New ACA-UNC Asheville Undergraduate Research Partnership
     Berea, Ky. -- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Appalachian College Association (ACA) that will expand undergraduate research expertise and opportunities for faculty and students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences at more than two dozen colleges in Central Appalachia, ACA President Alice Brown announced today. » MORE

UNC Asheville Professor Kevin Moorhead Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors
     One of UNC Asheville's most respected professors, Kevin Moorhead, was named today as a recipient of the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of North Carolina's Board of Governors. Moorhead, professor and chair of environmental studies, was nominated by a committee of UNC Asheville faculty. He will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize at a ceremony at UNC Chapel Hill next month. » MORE
