Great Smokies Writing Program Launches Online Publication
UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program has
launched a new online literary magazine, “The Great Smokies Review.”
The magazine offers former and current students of the Great Smokies
Writing Program an opportunity to share not only their creative
work, but their writing experiences and expertise, as well.

Registration is now open for more than 65 courses available during

Training, a required course for teaching and substituting in some

Carolina Symphony's Holiday Pops
Holiday tunes will float through the air like midwinter
snowflakes as the North Carolina Symphony takes the stage at UNC
Asheville for its popular Holiday Pops concert. The performance will
be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky
Auditorium. The 2009 tour will stop in Asheville for one night only.

Professor, Painter Virginia Derryberry to Hold Solo Exhibition at
Flood Fine Art Center Gallery
Virginia Derryberry, a noted painter and UNC Asheville art
professor, will hold a solo exhibition of recent work at the Flood
Fine Art Center Gallery, 109 Roberts St., in the Asheville River
Arts District from November 13 to December 5. The exhibition,
entitled "Eide/Eidola," features 15 large-scale paintings from her
Rebis series. It is Derryberry's first solo exhibition in Asheville
since 2000. An opening reception will be held 7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov.
13, in the gallery, which is located on the second floor of the Phil
Mechanic Building. The exhibition and reception are free and open to

concert season with five performances in November, ranging from jazz

Asheville Agreement Sets Stage for New Partnerships;
Joint Launch of RENCI Engagement Site Benefits Region
The long-standing, informal partnership between UNC
Asheville and City of Asheville took a step forward today with the
signing of a joint agreement that sets the stage for future
collaborations. UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder and Asheville
Mayor Terry Bellamy, who signed the agreement, were joined by UNC
President Erskine Bowles and city, university and elected officials
at the ceremony, held at the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The
memo of understanding provides a framework for further
collaborations in a number of areas important to the city and the
region: environmental sustainability, health and wellness, culture
and recreation, economic development and technology, and public

Princeton Review's "The Best 371 Colleges." The annual guidebook
highlights the top 10% of institutions nationally as "cream of the
crop colleges and universities." The rankings are based in part on a
survey of more than 122,000 college students, who provide candid
assessments of their institutions.

list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this
month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North
Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 16th consecutive year
