Greener UNC Asheville campus readies for academically competitive freshman class

UNC Asheville is preparing to welcome 550 new Bulldogs to the campus community this Friday as freshmen move into their residence halls and get ready to start classes on Monday, Aug. 20. And when freshman and returning students arrive, they will find new, top-notch science labs, a modern new residence hall, and a greener, more energy-efficient campus.

N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Transitions to New Name: OLLI at UNC Asheville

As of August 1, the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) has a new name, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville. The name change reflects a new relationship with a nationwide network of 116 Osher Institutes.

UNC Asheville Announces Faculty Promotions, New Faculty

UNC Asheville welcomes five new faculty members to campus this fall. They are: Curt Butera, assistant professor of Classics; Lyndi Hewitt, assistant professor, Sociology; Jackie Langille, assistant professor, Environmental Studies; Tiece Ruffin, assistant professor, Education; and Wiebke Strehl, associate professor and chair, Foreign Languages.

The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees will meet from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, July 9, and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the Mountain View Room in UNC Asheville's Sherrill Center.

UNC Asheville's "Seriously Creative" TV Spot Wins Telly Award

UNC Asheville's new, 30-second television commercial was recently awarded a 2012 Bronze Telly in the 33rd annual Telly Awards competition. The 30-second spot, titled "Seriously Creative," was entered in the Commercial/Regional TV & Multi-Market Cable – Schools/Colleges/Universities Category. This is the first Telly Award the university has won.

UNC Asheville Celebrates 84th Annual Commencement

A spring downpour couldn't dampen the spirit of the more than 5,000 family and friends gathered on UNC Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate the university's 2012 graduating class. Some 731 students were honored as the Class of 2012 during the 84th annual Commencement Ceremony, including 480 spring graduates, 222 winter graduates and 29 summer graduates.

Some 5,000 people will fill UNC Asheville's Main University Quadrangle beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5, as the university holds its 84th annual Commencement ceremony. Among the 480 students who have earned diplomas, more than 430 are expected to participate in commencement. UNC Asheville's Class of 2012 comprises 731 graduates, including those who earned their diplomas in August and December 2011.

UNC Asheville to Offer Health and Physical Education Licensure for Teachers

UNC Asheville is now accepting applications for a new K-12 teacher licensure program in Health and Physical Education. The program, approved this spring by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, begins in Fall 2012.

UNC Asheville's Catherine Frank Featured on UNC-TV's "North Carolina People" April 20

Catherine Frank, director of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNC Asheville, will discuss the center's genesis and future with William Friday on UNC-TV's "North Carolina People" set to air at 9 p.m. Friday, April 20, and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22. The program can also be seen online beginning Monday, April 23, on the UNC-TV website.
