UNC Asheville Prepares for Further State Budget Reductions

Acting on instructions from the University of North Carolina General Administration to plan for a 10 percent permanent budget reduction for the 2009-10 fiscal year, UNC Asheville announced plans to eliminate 43 positions, which will result in the loss of jobs for eight current staff members.

UNC Asheville Earns Top Spot in Fiske Guide to Colleges; University Named Best Buy for 16 Consecutive Years

As the 2010 college rankings begin to roll in, UNC Asheville continues to stand with some of the nation's finest colleges. The annual "Fiske Guide to Colleges" released its 2010 list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 16th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy.

UNC Asheville Celebrates 81st Annual Commencement

More than 4,000 family and friends gathered on UNC Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate UNC Asheville's 2009 graduating class. Some 612 students were honored during the 81st annual Commencement Ceremony, including 365 spring graduates, 221 winter graduates and 26 summer graduates. They were all treated to an impromptu performance by honorary degree recipient Doc Watson as well as an inspiring commencement address by Thomas L. Purce.

UNC Asheville Announces $3 Million Grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina for the N.C. Center for Health & Wellness; Funds Boost UNC Asheville’s Efforts to Promote Healthy Lifestyles for North Carolinians

UNC Asheville and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) Foundation announced today a $3 million grant from the BCBSNC Foundation to support the University’s North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness. The three-year grant is the most substantial ever for the foundation's Healthy Active Communities focus area and one of the largest in the University's history.

UNC Asheville Debuts Television Series on Key Community Issues; Show Hosted by Chancellor Anne Ponder Airs on AET in Buncombe County

UNC Asheville will debut its first television series, "A Conversation with Asheville's University," at 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, on Asheville Educational Television. Hosted by UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder, the program brings together the region’s outstanding innovators, policy-makers and educators to discuss collaborative approaches to key community issues. The conversational program will focus on a different topic each week -- community health and wellness, environmental research and technology, K-12 education and teacher preparation, and new trends among Western North Carolina retirees. 

Noted Educator Les Purce to Deliver Commencement Address; Purce, Doc Watson to Receive Honorary Degrees at May 16 Ceremony

UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder will confer honorary doctoral degrees on Evergreen State College President Thomas "Les" Purce and legendary musician Arthel "Doc" Watson at the University's spring Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 16, on UNC Asheville's Quad. Purce will give the commencement address to some 385 graduates.

UNC Asheville's N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Director Ron Manheimer to Retire; Interim Director Named, National Search to Begin Later this Year

Ron Manheimer, founding director of UNC Asheville’s nationally renowned North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR), has announced that he will retire July 1, 2009. Manheimer, who will soon turn 66, has been Center director since August 1988.

UNC Asheville Honors Alumni with Annual Awards

UNC Asheville recently honored four of its most outstanding alumni with the University's annual National Alumni Awards. UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder and UNC Asheville National Alumni Council Chair Neal Rhoades (Class of 1986) presented the awards at a special dinner on campus on March 23, 2009.

$1.5 Million Gift to UNC Asheville to Fund Scholarships, Academic Needs

Current and future students at UNC Asheville will be the immediate beneficiaries of a recent $1.5 million gift to the University. The gift is among the largest ever made to UNC Asheville.

At the anonymous donor's request, $1 million will go toward scholarships and $500,000 toward operating support. The University will use $250,000 to purchase equipment needed for the University's new Zeis Science & Multimedia Building that will be dedicated this fall. The remaining $250,000 will be set aside to help create a new endowed faculty chair; those funds will be matched in future by private funds and by the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund, established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1985.

UNC Asheville Welcomes New Live Mascot, "Rocky I"; Rescued Victorian Bulldog Makes Debut at Homecoming Basketball Game

UNC Asheville's bulldog mascot, Rocky, has been known for decades to be tenacious, strong and courageous… now rescued can be added to this list of traits.

The University will unveil its new live mascot "Rocky I," a rescued white Victorian Bulldog with black spots, at half-time of the men's basketball homecoming game against Coastal Carolina. The game tips off at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at UNC Asheville's Justice Center. Rocky I will make his triumphant entrance following the presentation of the 2009 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees.
