Functional and Decorative Art and Ceramics for Sale at UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville's Art Department will hold its annual Spring Ceramic and Art Sale from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 20, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall. The sale is open to the public.

UNC Asheville Hosts “Speak-Out” on Sexual Harassment

UNC Asheville will host a sexual harassment “speak-out” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, in the Humanities Lecture Hall on the campus. Taking place during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the speak-out will bring voice to diverse experiences of sexual harassment, and provide information about preventing and defending oneself against sexual harassment. The event is free and open to the public.

Experts on Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway to Speak at N.C. Center for Creative Retirement

Two of the region’s iconic landmarks, the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway, will be the subject of the next session in the “Celebrating Life in the Mountains” series at UNC Asheville’s N.C. Center for Creative Retirement. This event is free and open to the public, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Manheimer Room at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center.

UNC Asheville Provides Free Tax Preparation Help

With April 15 approaching, people who make $50,000 or less can get free help preparing their federal and state income returns, thanks to trained UNC Asheville faculty, staff and students volunteering in the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Already this tax season, UNC Asheville volunteers have helped prepare more than 300 federal and state tax returns, and helped taxpayers file for more than $430,000 in refunds.

Silk Shibori Exhibition by Michael Smith to Open at UNC Asheville

Silk shibori work by Asheville fiber artist Michael Smith will be showcased in a new exhibition, April 5-27 in Blowers Gallery, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

N.C. Agriculture Commissioner to Lead Local Food Forum at Sherrill Center

North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will lead a public forum featuring farmers, restaurateurs and others involved in the local food economy, beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room. This event is free and open to the public.

“Cherokee Journey to Forgiveness and Healing” – Patricia Grant to Speak at UNC Asheville

“Recognition: A Cherokee Journey to Forgiveness and Healing,” a talk by Patricia Grant, will take place at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 5 in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. It is free and open to the public, and lunch is provided.

For UNC Asheville Students, Spring Break Was a Time for Serving Communities

Should a week spent cutting sheet metal and sleeping in a converted school be considered a Spring Break? "I think it's better described as the best spring break ever," says Flannery Pearson-Clarke, a UNC Asheville junior majoring in Environmental Studies. She and eight other young women, all UNC Asheville students, spent their “week off” in rural Chavies, Ky., installing needed insulation and sheet metal skirting on mobile homes, to help needy residents save money and energy.

UNC Asheville and Asheville Area Chamber Host "Thank You Asheville" Rally March 27

UNC Asheville and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce will host a "Way to Go, Asheville" Rally on Tuesday, March 27, to thank the fans, volunteers and sponsors of the recent Southern Conference and Big South basketball tournaments. The hour-long event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Mountain View Room of the Sherrill Center on the UNC Asheville campus.

Award-winning educational researcher Gloria Ladson-Billings will give a talk, “Critical Race Theory and Education," at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. This lecture is free and open to the public.
