UNC Asheville's Career Center to Hold Panel on Careers for Animal Lovers

UNC Asheville’s Career Center will host a panel discussion on careers for animal lovers at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union, Mountain Suites. The panel of local experts will address employment opportunities and provide an opportunity for students to gain professional advice. The event is free and open to the public.
Furniture maker and sculptor Gail Fredell gives next “Meet the Maker” lecture

UNC Asheville’s Craft Studies Initiative will continue its “Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople” lecture series with a special talk by studio furniture maker and sculptor Gail Fredell. She will discuss her work at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall, room 302. Fredell, who recently moved to Asheville, is completing a number of projects that range in scale and context from residential, functional furniture to public sculpture, for both interior spaces and landscape settings.
UNC Asheville Invitational Art Exhibit Opens October 1

A new exhibit featuring ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture opens October 1 at UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The exhibiting artists have been invited by the Art Department faculty and represent the six media concentrations currently offered at UNC Asheville.
Exhibit of paintings by Pat Calderone to open at UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery

UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery will exhibit paintings by Pat Calderone during the month of October. A meet-the-artist reception will be held from 4 - 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1, in the Blowers Gallery on the ground floor of the Ramsey Library at UNC Asheville. The show, “Dance of the Spirit,” features works in acrylics and charcoal on canvas.
UNC Asheville’s Cultural and Special Events Season Kicks Off with One-Woman Show, “Nearly Lear”

What if the great and tragic story of King Lear were to be told by the King’s closest companion – his own Fool? This is “Nearly Lear,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s story that becomes not only poignant, but also mischievous, tender and achingly funny in the hands Susanna Hamnett. Hamnett, who co-created and stars in the one-woman show, takes to the stage at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. “Nearly Lear” kicks off the University’s 2010-2011 Cultural and Special Events Season.
Theatre UNCA Stages Series of Tennessee Williams' Short Plays

Theatre UNCA kicks off its fall season with three one-act plays by Tennessee Williams, including "The Long Goodbye," "Hello From Bertha" and "The Lady of Larkspur Lotion" from September 23-25. These performances are the first of a series of Williams' one-act plays to be staged throughout the fall semester. Performances will take place at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theater. Curtain is 8 p.m. All shows are open to the public.
Three Hands-On Workshops Offered at North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement

Registration is now open for the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement October workshops. The hands-on courses, which are open to students of various ages and skills, range from lessons in contemporary crochet applications to mask-making for Halloween.

UNC Asheville begins a new series, Regional Author Talks, with a special evening appearance by Susan Reinhardt, author and Asheville Citizen-Times columnist. Regional Author Talks will feature well-known Western North Carolina writers on many Tuesdays this fall. All are free and open to the public.
