FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Who attends the Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend and what are they seeking?
Typically, participants come from 20-25 states around the country. Both singles and couples, they are usually in their 50s and 60s. The majority are still working though many say they are within three years of retirement or some work-related decision (going part-time or trying something new). Most attending the workshop are considering relocation and want help assessing their options, learning about resources, and determining a decision-making process. Some are interested in learning more about western North Carolina. During the sessions, they will have a chance to explore the impact of relocation on concerns such as finances and taxes, identity, working and volunteering, relationships with friends and family, and more.
Does the Weekend address issues for singles as well as couples?
Not only do we encourage singles to attend and have some workshop options targeting singles issues, we also endorse the approach that even couples need to explore the transitional issues individually before negotiating them as a couple. After all, a joint decision made from two well-reasoned viewpoints is a strong decision.

Is this Weekend about moving to Asheville?
Some who attend the Weekend are interested in learning about Asheville and surrounding towns as possible places to relocate. We provide information about the region within the context that similar information or questions are applicable to any community you are considering. In this way, we hope all sessions provide solid information and a forum for discovery.
How does the Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend differ from the Paths to Creative Retirement workshop also offered by the Center for Creative Retirement?
Both workshops address mid- and later-life transition issues. Because the primary focus of the Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend is learning about the challenges and opportunities of choosing and moving to a new community, other issues are seen through that lens. The Weekend also a provides options for learning about the Asheville area, including printed materials, workshop choices, and community tours. Paths to Creative Retirement limits its enrollment to accommodate an intensive and highly-interactive format. Relocation is only one of the many issues addressed during the workshop that focuses on personal transitions to a meaningful retirement.
What is included in the cost of the Weekend?
Registration covers the seminar and materials as well as light breakfasts, lunches and an early-evening social. Registration fee does not include lodging, but we provide ample information on lodging choices to those who register.
Where do people stay while attending the Weekend?
Most people stay in area hotels, inns or B&Bs. Some stay with friends or family in the area. Individuals make their own arrangements though we do provide suggestions.
Do I need a car for the Weekend?
Transporation is available from the Asheville Airport (AVL) to downtown Asheville and area hotels. Weekend events are held on University of North Carolina at Asheville campus, located a mile north of downtown. Taxi service is available. We will also help facilitate ride-sharing for those staying in suggested downtown hotels. If you wish to explore the area on your own, however, you will need a car.
